Martijn Kleverlaan appointed as NAM Managing Director

Thursday, October 1 2026

Appointment

Martijn Kleverlaan will take over as Managing Director of NAM on 1 November 2026.

He succeeds Martijn van Haaster, who will return to Shell after three years leading the company.

Van Haaster has overseen a period of significant transformation at NAM. One of the most historic moments came with the production of the final gas from the Groningen field, bringing an important chapter in the company’s history to a close.

At the same time, NAM embarked on a major programme to decommission and remove both above-ground facilities and underground infrastructure.

During his tenure, NAM also sold and transferred its offshore portfolio to Tenaz Energy and reshaped its organisation around two core activities: safely and efficiently producing oil and gas in the Netherlands, and decommissioning infrastructure that is no longer in use.

More recently, NAM restarted oil production in Schoonebeek after a hiatus of more than four years. The company has also stepped up its engagement with local communities and strengthened cooperation in the regions where it operates.

An agreement was reached with the Dutch government on the Ternaard project, with NAM deciding not to proceed with drilling beneath the Wadden Sea. Van Haaster also announced plans to relocate NAM’s headquarters from Assen to Sappemeer, another step in the company’s transition to a leaner organisation focused on the future.

Reflecting on his time at NAM, Van Haaster said: “I look back on my time at NAM with great gratitude. It is a remarkable company and one I feel deeply connected to. Above all, I am incredibly proud of the people at NAM, who work with dedication every day to help provide the Netherlands with safe, reliable and affordable energy.”

“We have navigated major changes together and reached some important milestones. Today, NAM is a smaller but resilient organisation with a clear direction and an important role to play in both the Dutch energy supply and the energy transition. It is a company that actively engages with the communities in which it operates and contributes locally to new developments. I am confident that NAM has a relevant future ahead.”

Martijn Kleverlaan, 53, brings 25 years of experience at Shell, where he has held a wide range of technical, operational and leadership positions. He has spent more than a decade of his career at NAM and, until recently, served as Asset Manager responsible for operations in the northern Netherlands.

Under Kleverlaan’s leadership, NAM will continue to focus on the safe and responsible production of oil and gas, accelerating the decommissioning of facilities and pipelines that are no longer needed, and strengthening its relationships with local communities and stakeholders.
