Vattenfall and Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners (CIP) have selected EEW Special Pipe Constructions GmbH to produce 69 monopile foundations for the first phase of Zeevonk.
This is a proposed offshore wind farm in the Dutch North Sea.
The foundations are based on a design without a transition piece (TP), a configuration in which the wind turbine towers are mounted directly onto the monopiles.
TP-free foundations remain a relatively recent development in offshore wind, requiring close integration between the foundation design, the turbine and the installation method.
The use of this technology is one of the circularity measures committed to during the permitting process.
According to Vattenfall and CIP, removing the transition piece reduces the amount of materials and steel needed, which would help lower carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions during the production phase.
The simplified design would also allow for a more efficient logistics chain and a shorter installation time.
Fewer transport movements and reduced use of installation vessels during production and construction would result in lower emissions and a reduced impact on the marine environment, according to both companies.
