COSCO SHIPPING Specialized Carriers has completed the DP float-over installation of the Yangjiang Sanshandao 2GW Offshore HVDC Station using its 65,000 DWT semi-submersible vessel, Xiang Tai Kou.
Completed on July 23, the installation set a new world record for the heaviest DP float-over operation, with a total installation weight of nearly 30,000 tons, including DSF.
This marks the company’s second successful installation of a 2GW offshore HVDC station in just two months. Following the completion of the Qingzhou V & VII project in June, the Xiang Tai Kou team delivered another complex offshore installation with exceptional efficiency, demonstrating the vessel’s reliability and the team’s operational excellence.
The installation required exceptional precision. Guided by Xiang Tai Kou’s advanced DP system, the vessel positioned the converter station within the jacket structure with centimeter-level accuracy. The operation began at 7:12 a.m. local time, load transfer was completed by 9:00 a.m., and the vessel safely departed the site by 9:40 a.m.
The Yangjiang Sanshandao HVDC station is a seven-story steel structure weighing 25,200 tons, with a footprint comparable to a football field and a height equivalent to a 15-story building.
As the centerpiece of China’s first integrated offshore-onshore VSC-HVDC transmission project, it will deliver approximately 6 billion kWh of clean electricity annually to the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area.
The project is expected to save 1.74 million tonnes of standard coal and reduce carbon dioxide emissions by approximately 4.63 million tonnes each year.
