Wind Energy – Beacon Wind
bp has chosen to withdraw its application for transmission connection for the 2500MW Beacon Wind project located off the coast of New York.
In a statement, bp explained that this decision was made to allow for additional time to be allocated to the evaluation of the project’s design and configuration. The company also mentioned that since the project submitted its application and queue position, there has been an evolution in New York’s approach to offshore wind project interconnection, with a shift towards a more coordinated offshore transmission.
The oil supermajor added that it supports the ongoing Public Policy Transmission Need project in New York City, designed to upgrade the city’s transmission infrastructure to accommodate more capacity from offshore wind in the coming years.
The withdrawal follows a request by bp for a year-long delay in the application process from the New York Public Service Commission, making bp the latest developer to re-examine plans due to uncertainty in the US market after President Donald Trump put a halt to federal offshore permitting.
It is understood that a delay would also allow bp to reassess its point of interconnection in the city.
