Tanzania’s government has awarded state oil company Tanzania Petroleum Development Corporation (TPDC) four new oil and gas exploration blocks.

The blocks — Mnazi Bay North, West Songo Songo, Eyasi-Wembere and Lindi-Mtwara — have already had some initial exploration activity such as seismic surveys.

The East African country is aiming to ramp up energy output, including by finalising agreements on a $42 billion liquefied natural gas project in the coming months.

On Tuesday, Tanzania announced that French oil company Maurel & Prom (M&P) has confirmed a natural gas discovery in Tanzania’s Mnazi Bay license, with preliminary estimates indicating approximately 200 billion cubic feet (bcf) of gas in a reservoir reached by drilling from onshore to a target 4.5 kilometers offshore.

Tanzania’s LNG project is being led by Equinor and Shell. While most of the LNG will be exported, part of the production will be for the domestic market.
