Around 70 people have been evacuated, and production has been shut down at Equinor’s Visund oil and gas platform in the Norwegian North Sea following a fire on Wednesday.

A company spokesperson told local broadcaster NRK that the fire occurred in an electrical system on board the Visund platform and has now been extinguished.

No injuries were reported among the 128 people on board the platform at the time of the incident, and those evacuated were taken to nearby installations.

“Repairs will be needed. It is too early to say when production can restart,” Reuters quoted the spokesperson as saying.

According to data from Gassco, which operates the integrated Norwegian gas transport system, the incident has taken all of Visund’s 13.2 million cubic metres per day of gas export capacity out of action.
