CCS
The UK’s first dedicated carbon capture and storage (CCS) platform has departed from Piombino in Italy, bound for the waters off north-west England.
This is the site of Eni’s Liverpool Bay CO₂ transportation and storage project.
Once there, the Douglas CCS platform will serve as the offshore hub for a project that will inject CO₂ captured from hard-to-abate industrial emissions in northwest England and north Wales into depleted gas fields for permanent storage. This development is a key part of the HyNet industrial cluster.
Rosetti Marino completed fabrication of the 3,460-tonne platform in less than 18 months from the date of the contract award. The company carried out assembly at a dedicated facility in Piombino, working alongside the site operator, Piombino Industrie Marittime.
The facility is due to be installed later this month and pinned into place by eight 730-tonne piles. It is the first of four platforms that the Italian yard is building for the project.
The Douglas platform will receive CO₂ through a repurposed offshore pipeline network and distribute the waste gas to three other platforms, which will then inject it underground.
