The Culzean floating wind turbine is ready for tow.
It was confirmed on 31 July that the Vestas turbine has been integrated with its Ocergy floating foundation, and that the unit will shortly move out to its location around 220 kilometres off the east coast of Scotland.
It is a single 3 MW machine, sited about 2 kilometres west of the Culzean gas platform (a project that Global Maritime were Marine warranty Surveyors for back in 2016-2018), and expected to supply roughly 20 per cent of the platform’s electricity demand once commissioned.
The project won seabed rights in Crown Estate Scotland’s INTOG round in 2023 and is now led by NEO NEXT+ Energy.
Powering producing platforms with floating wind is still a small field. Pilots like this one are where the marine operations knowledge gets built, and that knowledge has potential to be worth more than the megawatts.
