Four new Guyana discovery opportunities identified through AI

Stabroek Block

ExxonMobil has identified four additional potential discovery opportunities in Guyana after applying artificial intelligence to its Stabroek Block exploration data.

These results were disclosed by Senior Vice President and Chief Financial Officer Neil Hansen during ExxonMobil’s second-quarter 2026 earnings call on 31 July.

The company trained AI models using information gathered from previous discoveries, drilling operations and analysis of the block’s subsurface. Hansen said that these models were then applied to other areas of the offshore acreage.

“We put a lot of effort into artificial intelligence and training models based on our existing findings, all our drilling operations and our subsurface characterisation, and we have now applied this to the rest of the block.”

This work has produced four new discovery opportunities in addition to those we had previously identified.

However, ExxonMobil has not yet determined whether these opportunities contain commercial quantities of hydrocarbons.

The company did not disclose the locations of these opportunities. It also did not provide estimated resource volumes or a timetable for drilling.
