Chinese cable producer Far East Cable has initiated the building of a new, high-capacity multipurpose cable-laying vessel at ZPMC’s Shanghai shipyard.
The ship is designed to assist with offshore wind projects, subsea interconnectors, and telecommunications cable installation work.
According to statements from ZPMC and Far East Cable, the vessel is engineered for unrestricted ocean travel.
It will be 148 meters long, 38 meters wide, and can house up to 100 crew members.
The new cable-laying ship will incorporate a DP2 dynamic positioning system and a concentric dual-outlet rotating cable carousel. It will have a maximum operational depth of 150 meters. The firms noted that this vessel will possess one of the largest cable-carrying capacities among Chinese cable-laying ships.
After its delivery, the vessel will be used for various offshore tasks, such as installing subsea cables for wind farms, linking islands and cross-sea power grids, performing cable repairs, installing subsea umbilicals, and supporting offshore wind operations and maintenance.
It will also be able to install and fix long-distance submarine fiber-optic cables, allowing it to serve both the offshore renewable energy and subsea telecom industries.
