PETRONAS has made oil discovery offshore Suriname

Tuesday, July 14 2026

Caiman

The Caiman-1 exploration well encountered multiple oil-bearing Cretaceous sandstone intervals after being drilled in just 90 metres of water to a total depth of 5,065 metres.

The nearby gas well was drilled in 610 metres of water, making Caiman-1 a much shallower offshore discovery.

This discovery strengthens Suriname’s growing position as one of the world’s most promising offshore exploration regions and highlights the continued exploration success in the Guyana-Suriname Basin.
