New nacelle assembly facility for Vestas in Japan

Saturday, July 11 2026

METI

On 10 July 2026, Japan’s Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) announced that it would provide up to $8.0 million in support for a new nacelle assembly facility to be built by Danish wind turbine giant Vestas in Kitakyushu City.

This initiative aims to accelerate the deployment of offshore wind power in Japan by promoting the domestic production of core components, which has been hindered by high costs.

Vestas plans to begin operations by fiscal year 2029 and chose Kitakyushu due to its concentration of suppliers and logistical advantages.

The cities of Muroran in Hokkaido and Akita had also expressed strong interest in hosting the facility.
