Taiwan’s offshore wind capacity ranks 5th globally

Taiwan ranked fifth globally in installed offshore wind capacity in 2025 and third in new capacity additions, the Energy Administration said Sunday.

The administration said Taiwan’s offshore wind sector reached 500 turbines on 12 June with the installation of its latest unit, bringing total capacity to 4.8 gigawatts. Generation surpassed 10 billion kilowatt-hours for the first time last year.

Taiwan’s offshore wind industry has grown rapidly since the first two demonstration turbines were installed in 2017, MOEA said, noting that offshore wind markets in Europe have been developing for 20 to 30 years, and Taiwan built 4.8 GW of offshore wind capacity within roughly a decade.

The Energy Administration under the Ministry of Economic Affairs said that Taiwan continues to expand its offshore wind sector despite challenges that the industry has faced over the past several years, including the COVID-19 pandemic, inflation and changing global geopolitical conditions, which have affected offshore wind projects worldwide.

The agency credited developers, suppliers, financial institutions, civil society groups, and project personnel for the achievement. It also thanked government agencies for helping resolve development hurdles.

It said it will continue expanding offshore wind to strengthen energy resilience, increase green power supply, enhance industrial competitiveness, and support Taiwan’s goal of net-zero emissions by 2050.
