First wind turbine for HKW off Dutch Coast

Tuesday, June 2 2026

Wind Energy

On Saturday, 30 May, Van Oord’s installation vessel Boreas installed the first wind turbine at Ecowende, approximately 53 km off the coast of IJmuiden.

In total 52 Vestas V236-15.0 MW turbines will be installed. 760 MW of clean energy. Around 3% of the Netherlands’ national electricity demand is sustainably supplied.

“The installation of the first wind turbine is a significant moment – not just for Vestas and Ecowende, but for the entire offshore wind sector. This project demonstrates that large-scale wind energy generation and ecological responsibility can go hand in hand. We are proud that our technology forms the backbone of what will become the world’s most ecologically advanced offshore wind farm,” said Nils de Baar, President Vestas North & Central Europe.

Hollandse Kust West VI (HKW) represents the continued scaling of utility-grade offshore wind in the North Sea, with multiple contractors and supply chain partners executing in parallel to meet a 2026 commissioning target.
