TotalEnergies is intensifying its global energy exploration efforts, committing approximately US$1 billion each year as Namibia rises as one of the world’s most promising new oil and gas frontiers.
The announcement comes amid a wave of offshore discoveries that have placed the southern African nation firmly on the global energy map. Speaking at the Namibia International Energy Conference, Senior Vice President for Africa, Mike Sangster, emphasized that financial investment alone is not enough to guarantee success.
“Our progress depends not only on capital, but also on trust, strong partnerships, and a long-term commitment,” Sangster told delegates in Windhoek.
He stressed the importance of collaboration among governments, private companies, and local communities, noting that large-scale energy projects require time, coordination, and mutual confidence. “We are on a journey together,” he said, adding that open communication has been key to the company’s expansion in Namibia since 2017.
With decades of experience across Africa, TotalEnergies views the continent as central to its future growth strategy. The company continues to expand its footprint through exploration and production initiatives across the region.
A major focus in Namibia is the offshore Venus oil discovery, a project that could transform the country into a significant oil-producing nation. While describing the development as complex, Sangster highlighted its potential to drive economic growth, create jobs, and increase government revenues.
In preparation, TotalEnergies has already launched training programmes aimed at equipping local communities with the skills needed to participate in the emerging energy sector.
The company is expected to reach a final investment decision on its Namibia projects by mid-2026, a milestone that could mark a turning point for both the company and the country’s energy future.
