NAM to resume onshore gas production in Groningen

Saturday, April 11 2026

Fossil Energy – the Netherlands

The Dutch Petroleum Company (NAM) is preparing to resume onshore gas production near Warffum in northern Groningen.

The plan is to begin repair work on the installations this weekend, as they have been out of operation for some time. This is partly because production wells have filled with water, which is a common problem when a gas well is out of use for a long time.

The energy crisis in the Middle East and low gas field reserves have created new political pressure within the Dutch House of Representatives to extract as much as possible from the hundreds of onshore and offshore gas fields following the closure of the Groningen gas field in April 2024.

An earthquake occurred in Warffum in 2025.
