Fossil Energy – Gas Production
ONE-Dyas, based in the Netherlands, has commenced gas production from the second production well at its N05-A platform in the North Sea, marking a significant milestone in the project’s development.
With the addition of this second well, total annual production at N05-A has increased to approximately 1 billion cubic meters of natural gas. This expansion strengthens the platform’s contribution to the energy supply of both the Netherlands and Germany at a time when energy security and geopolitical stability remain key priorities.
Previously, the first production well at N05-A delivered around 700 million cubic meters of gas per year. The commissioning of the second well represents a crucial step toward fully utilizing the platform’s total production capacity of 2 billion cubic meters annually—equivalent to roughly 7% of current Dutch gas demand and 2.5% of German demand.
Ongoing drilling activities are expected to bring production to full capacity in the fourth quarter of this year, ahead of the winter season.
The broader cross-border GEMS area, where N05-A is located, is estimated to hold approximately 50 billion cubic meters of natural gas. This volume is distributed across multiple smaller fields that together support a stable and reliable energy supply for both countries.
Chris de Ruyter van Steveninck, CEO of ONE-Dyas, commented: “By scaling up production from N05-A, we are increasing the supply of locally produced natural gas with among the lowest emissions. This aligns with the Dutch small fields policy: meeting existing demand as much as possible with domestic resources—responsibly, reliably, and as a key foundation for the energy transition.”
The start-up of the second well marks the transition from initial production to full-scale ramp-up.
Increased regional gas production delivers:
• Reduced dependence on imported gas;
• A reliable contribution to energy supply during the energy transition;
• Efficient use of existing North Sea infrastructure within environmental and safety standards.
N05-A produces natural gas with near-zero CO₂ emissions, as the platform operates on electricity supplied by the nearby German offshore wind farm Riffgat. Both production and drilling activities are fully electrified—an approach that is unique in this part of the North Sea.
