Large subsea cable transportation project

Monday, April 6 2026

General – Transportation

One week ago, Dutch Offshore Contractors (DOC) commenced one of the largest subsea cable transportation projects.

Heavy-lift carrier FJORD departed from Vlissingen today for a European offshore energy sector project.

For this complex operation, DOC has mobilised the Fjord as a fully integrated subsea-cable-transport unit. In Soussaki, Greece, DOC facilitates an intensive loading campaign.

The specifications of this project highlight its scale:

– Transport of approximately 200 kilometres of subsea cable

– A total loaded weight of 19,500 tonnes

– Installation of three carousels, each with a capacity of 9,000 tonnes

– An advanced ‘dual spooling’ operation, where cables are loaded directly and simultaneously from the factory with continuous monitoring of parameters

Within this project, DOC is responsible for the full turnkey execution from initial engineering and deck-layout design to operational delivery.

After completion of the loading process, the Fjord departed for Poland, where the cables will be offloaded directly onto the cable-laying vessel for installation.
