First major hydrogen plant connected to Dutch Hydrogen Network

General – Hydrogen Plant

Gasunie subsidiary Hynetwork has connected the first hydrogen plant to the Dutch Hydrogen Network.

The ‘golden weld’ of the customer connection was made between the 200 MW Holland Hydrogen 1 plant at Rotterdam’s Maasvlakte and the hydrogen pipeline.

The connection work was carried out by contractor Hanab. This marks the first time that a green hydrogen producer has been directly connected to the national hydrogen infrastructure. This marks another step in the development of the hydrogen network, which will interconnect Dutch industry and connect it to industry abroad. This is a key condition for decarbonising industry in the Netherlands and north-western Europe.

This follows the successful completion of the first 32 kilometres of the hydrogen pipeline earlier this year, which involved filling it with green hydrogen and bringing it up to the correct pressure. Constructed by Hynetwork, the hydrogen pipeline largely runs parallel to the A15 inside an existing energy corridor, alongside other key infrastructure, including the CO₂ pipeline used for the Porthos project.
