Wind Energy – Coating System
A corrosion protection coating system from Sherwin-Williams has been applied to the monopile foundations of the He Dreiht offshore wind farm in the North Sea.
Steelwind Nordenham manufactured the monopiles.
Each foundation measures up to 71 metres in length and weighs around 1,350 tonnes.
To protect the steel structures from long-term exposure to saltwater, currents, and splash zone conditions, the Dura-Plate SW-501 Series epoxy coating was selected.
This 100% solvent-free, high-build epoxy system is designed to provide a dense barrier against corrosion. It is intended for offshore structures that require an extended service life and have limited access for maintenance.
It is compliant with the relevant offshore corrosion protection standards, including VGBE-S-021-02-2023, NORSOK M-501, and ISO 12944-9:2018.
Application took place at Steelwind Nordenham’s fabrication facility in northern Germany. Robert Krebs applied the coating using manual airless spraying to achieve consistent film thickness and surface coverage across the large-diameter monopiles.
The He Dreiht project, developed by EnBW, comprises 64 turbines with a total capacity of 960 MW. Located around 90 kilometres north-west of Borkum, the wind farm is scheduled to supply renewable electricity from spring 2026.
