Fossil Energy – Yamal
GazpromNeft announces that it has discovered the largest oil field in Yamal in 30 years.
The field, named after Aleksey Kontorovich, has expanded the company’s large oil and gas cluster in the southern portion of the Yamal Peninsula in the West Siberian Arctic.
GPN’s press service says that the field holds geological reserves of 55 million tons (~ 400 million bbls) of oil.
The field was discovered in the Arctic zone of the Yamal-Nenets Autonomous Okrug, in the okrug’s Yamal District, in the south portion of the Yamal Peninsula.
The field was discovered within the Yuzhno-Novoportovskiy and Saletinskiy subsurface blocks and the field is partially located offshore in the waters of Ob Bay.
The discovery was preceded by three years of exploration of the blocks, including 2D and 3D seismic surveys, as well as the creation of geological and hydrodynamic subsurface models.
During the drilling of an appraisal well at a depth of 2.7 km, commercial flows of low-sulphur and low-viscosity oil, gas, and condensate were obtained.
