First monopiles for Hornsea 3 at Steel River Quay

Wind Energy – Monopiles

The first six monopiles for Ørsted’s Hornsea 3 offshore wind project have now arrived at Steel River Quay, completing a 960 nautical-mile journey from Bilbao, Spain, in two shipments from manufacturer Haizea Wind Group.

These are the first of 197 monopiles destined for Hornsea 3, set to become the world’s largest single offshore wind farm.

Each structure measures around 90 metres in length, weighs an average of 1,670 tonnes, and spans 8 metres in diameter at the top, widening to up to 11 metres at the base.

Transported to the UK aboard Biglift’s CY Interocean II, the load-out and load-in operations were delivered by the Cadeler team, working in close collaboration with experts from Ørsted and Haizea in Spain, and Ørsted and Steel River Quay at Teesworks in the UK.

Now safely handled and stored at Steel River Quay, these components mark another significant step in Teesside’s expanding role in the UK’s offshore wind supply chain, reinforcing the region’s position at the heart of the energy transition.
