General – Partnerships
German energy group RWE has announced a significant expansion of its strategic partnerships with ADNOC and Masdar, marking a new phase in efforts to strengthen energy security in Germany and across Europe.

The announcement was made by RWE Chief Executive Markus Krebber and underscored by high-level political support. Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, President of the United Arab Emirates, and German Chancellor Friedrich Merz attended the exchange of two Memoranda of Understanding during the Chancellor’s official state visit to the UAE.
The agreements were signed by Dr Sultan Al Jaber, UAE Minister of Industry and Advanced Technology, Managing Director and Group CEO of ADNOC, and Chairman of Masdar, together with RWE CEO Markus Krebber.
Under the first agreement, RWE will build on its long-standing relationship with the ADNOC Group to explore cooperation on liquefied natural gas (LNG) supplies to Germany and other European markets. The framework allows for deliveries of up to one million tonnes of LNG per year over a period of up to ten years. The initiative is expected to enhance security of supply while further diversifying RWE’s global LNG portfolio.
The second Memorandum of Understanding, signed with Masdar, focuses on battery energy storage systems (BESS) in Germany. Recognising the growing importance of flexible storage for grid stability and the integration of renewable energy, the partners will jointly assess investment opportunities in both existing and new BESS projects. Masdar will also explore potential investments in RWE’s current battery storage assets in Germany.
The collaboration builds on a strong existing partnership between RWE and Masdar, most recently highlighted by their joint success in the UK offshore wind auction for the Dogger Bank South projects.
Together, the agreements underline RWE’s strategy of combining secure energy supplies with long-term investments in low-carbon infrastructure to support Europe’s energy transition.
