JERA Nex bp announces withdrawal from New Zealand wind scene

Monday, January 5 2026

General – New Zealand

JERA Nex bp, a collaboration between the Japanese energy developer JERA and bp, has announced that it will focus on other markets and shut down its New Zealand-based renewables division.

The company was one of five that wrote to the government in May 2024, indicating that a planned seabed mining project in the South Taranaki Bight could jeopardise the future of offshore wind energy in New Zealand.

Currently, only two of the five signatories are currently still intending to establish an offshore wind project in the country.

Peter Spencer, JERA Nex bp country manager, said: “We are not proceeding with the development of offshore wind in New Zealand and will cease our activities in the country at the end of 2025.

“New Zealand has world-class offshore wind potential but the timing is not right for us as we focus on business in core markets.”
