ExxonMobil pushes ahead with further testing at Barreleye discovery

Fossil Energy – Exploration Drilling

ExxonMobil Guyana is continuing exploration drilling at the Barreleye-3 well in the Stabroek Block, according to a notice issued by Guyana’s Maritime Administration Department.

The drilling campaign is being conducted by the drillship Stena Carron, with operations scheduled to commence on December 30. Barreleye-3 is part of ExxonMobil’s ongoing appraisal of the Barreleye discovery, which was first announced in 2022.

The Barreleye prospect is located approximately 20 miles southeast of the Liza field, Guyana’s first offshore oil development. ExxonMobil previously reported encountering around 230 feet of hydrocarbon-bearing sandstone at the site, underscoring its potential significance.

Before the current operation, ExxonMobil Guyana drilled the Barreleye-2 appraisal well, which included a drill stem test. The company is now advancing with the third well to further assess the resource and determine the most suitable development strategy.

Speaking in October, ExxonMobil Guyana President Alistair Routledge noted that the area presents technical challenges and requires additional evaluation before a final development plan can be established.
