The global energy think tank Ember has said that the world is set to add a record amount of renewable energy capacity again in 2025.
According to Ember’s analysis of monthly solar and wind deployment data up to September, 793 GW of capacity is expected to be added in 2025, which is an increase of 11% from the expected 717 GW in 2024.
This builds on growth of 22% in 2023 and 66% in 2022, Ember said.
Solar additions are projected to rise by 9%, while wind is expected to grow by 21%. Solar is set to grow by a greater amount in absolute terms.
Ember also stated that China is expected to account for 66% of global solar additions and 69% of global wind additions in 2025.
After strong growth from 2023 to 2025, the organisation said that additions now need to rise by 12% per year from 2026 to 2030 to meet the tripling goal.
Ember stated that governments’ current 2030 targets only align with a doubling of capacity, creating uncertainty over achieving a tripling.
The group added that the latest IEA renewables main case points to a 15% capacity shortfall and a 28% shortfall in generation by 2030.
