RWE plans hydrogen-compatible gas-fired power station

Tuesday, November 4 2025

General – Power Station

RWE has selected Tecnicas Reunidas and GE Vernova as suppliers for the development of a 850 MW hydrogen combined cycle plant.

A visualization of the planned plant can be found in the RWE media library (source: RWE).

The Técnicas Reunidas’ works will include the design engineering, as well as the construction and commissioning of the plant.

GE Vernova will supply the gas and steam turbines, generators, and the heat recovery boiler.

The hydrogen-compatible combined cycle power plant with an output of around 850 megawatts could be constructed at the former RWE power station in Voerde.

Such plants are crucial for ensuring Germany’s long-term energy security and will thus contribute to the successful phase-out of coal. As part of its power plant strategy, the German government has announced that it will soon create a regulatory framework for tenders for hydrogen-compatible gas-fired power plants. RWE is currently preparing to participate in the tenders, and if awarded the contract, it will begin construction of the plant in Voerde without delay.

The plant will be able to use 50% natural gas and 50% hydrogen at the time of its commissioning, planned for 2030, and exclusively hydrogen later. This facility is part of RWE’s ongoing effort to build such generation units in some of its existing sites to contribute to the German government’s plan to complete the decommissioning of all coal-fired power plants by 2030.
