Adriatic oilfield restarts after months-long shutdown

Fossil Energy – Energean

After a nine-month hiatus, production has resumed at one of Italy’s key offshore oilfields.

Energean Italy, a subsidiary of London-based Energean, announced that operations at the Rospo Mare field, located approximately 20 kilometers off the coast of Abruzzo, restarted on October 12.

The field, which had been offline since January 2025, returned to operation following extensive restoration work carried out by the company’s Italian team.

“Over the past months, the company has dedicated more than 50,000 man-hours to restoration activities,” said Nicolas Katcharov, CEO of Energean Italy. “This demonstrates the importance we place on health, safety, and environmental performance by investing in training, updating our protocols, and strengthening our culture of prevention. Today, the Rospo Mare field is back online, and I would like to thank all our stakeholders who made this achievement possible.”

The Rospo Mare complex consists of three production platforms—RSM A, RSM B, and RSM C—linked to the floating storage and offloading (FSO) vessel Alba Marina, which stores crude oil before shipment. RSM B serves as the main processing hub, connected to the satellite platforms and the Alba Marina via two 16-inch sealines.

Energean expects to restore full production across all three platforms within days, pending final regulatory approvals.

The company describes Rospo Mare as one of the most significant offshore crude oil fields in Italy, with a production capacity exceeding 2,000 barrels per day. The field is projected to remain operational well beyond 2040, marking a major milestone in Italy’s domestic energy production strategy.
