Fossil Energy – Iraq

ExxonMobil and Iraq have signed an agreement for the US supermajor to re-enter the Middle East country, although neither side released many details about what the plan will entail.

In a statement posted on social media, Iraq Prime Minister Mohammed Shia Al-Sudani announced that his country signed a heads of agreement (HOA) with ExxonMobil during a signing ceremony in Baghdad on Wednesday.

Although the statement provided few details about the HOA, it mentioned that Iraq is very interested in collaborating with oil majors, especially U.S. companies, to operate oil fields like the Majnoon field in Basra.

The social media statement called the deal “an important step for the future of Iraq’s oil sector and for strengthening economic relations with the United States.”

ExxonMobil senior vice president Peter Larden attended the signing ceremony, according to Al-Sudani’s office.
