The Australian Government has recently unveiled its latest Net Zero Plan, setting a new target to cut 62–70% of greenhouse gas emissions by 2035 (against 2005 levels).
This builds on the 43% reduction goal by 2030 and sets the pathway toward achieving net zero by 2050.
The plan outlines five key priorities to drive deep decarbonisation: expanding clean electricity across the economy; lowering emissions through electrification and efficiency; scaling clean fuel use; accelerating new technologies and growing net carbon removals.
For the energy sector, the Net Zero Plan signals an orderly coal exit by 2035 to create space for renewables to become the backbone of the grid. With more than a 90% reduction in power sector emissions, it highlights the urgency for clean, reliable energy generation to fill the gap.
Offshore wind, supported by the designation of six offshore renewable energy zones, will be a central pillar in delivering large-scale, dependable clean power to industrial hubs and coastal cities.
By tapping into Australia’s vast coastal wind resources, offshore wind can provide around-the-clock, homegrown energy security, while creating jobs and revitalising coastal communities.
