Sweden moves closer to major offshore wind investment

Wind Energy – Sweden

Sweden is a step closer to adding a major source of renewable power after the County Administrative Board of Uppsala recommended government approval for Deep Wind Offshore’s planned Olof Skötkonung wind farm in the Gulf of Gävle.

The final decision now rests with the Swedish government, which has underlined the need for reliable and cost-effective electricity to meet industrial demand and strengthen national energy security.

With a planned capacity of up to 1.4 GW and expected annual output of around 5.5 TWh, the Olof Skötkonung project could deliver large amounts of clean power to bidding zone SE3—an area where demand is high and new generation is urgently needed.

“This recommendation confirms the strength of the project and its role in securing Sweden’s future energy supply,” said Magnus Hallman, Deep Wind Offshore’s Country Manager in Sweden. “By adding renewable power, we can reduce dependence on fossil imports and boost Sweden’s competitiveness.”

Offshore wind has emerged as one of the fastest ways to bring large-scale power to the Swedish grid. Industry experts say projects like Olof Skötkonung not only add new generation capacity but also provide grid stability.

A recent study from Energiforsk, the national energy research institute, concluded that Sweden can integrate more renewable electricity without compromising reliability.

Deep Wind Offshore is also exploring connections to both the transmission grid and the regional grid, which could enable local households and businesses to benefit directly from the project. The company says this will help attract future industrial investments in the region.
