Fossil Energy – Cooperation
Suriname’s President Jennifer Geerlings-Simons and Guyana’s re-elected President Irfaan Ali agreed on Saturday in Nieuw Nickerie to deepen bilateral cooperation, with an emphasis on energy security and the construction of the Corantijn Bridge.
In a joint statement, the leaders emphasized the importance of collaboration in the oil and gas sector, renewable energy, and regional electricity grids. Ali highlighted that cooperation extends beyond crude oil, focusing on natural gas development, renewable energy, and grid interconnection.
The talks come at a time when Suriname is further exploring gas discoveries in offshore Blocks 52 and 63, while Guyana continues its Gas-to-Energy project at Wales to reduce energy costs and expand industrial capacity.
Both presidents called on their private sectors to cooperate more closely through joint ventures and cross-border investments. They also confirmed their commitment to the realisation of the Corantijn Bridge, which is seen as a crucial step for trade, tourism, and economic integration.
With the rapid development of oil and gas in the Guiana Basin, closer coordination between Suriname and Guyana appears to be decisive for future regional dynamics.
