Wind Energy – Floating Wind

Equinor’s Firefly FWF project has missed the 3rd of September deadline to sign REC agreements with Renewable Portfolio Standard (RPS) suppliers (the largest power producers in the country).

According to EnergyPulse form the UK failure to meet this deadline could result in the withdrawal of financial support and a five-year ban on bidding in future support rounds.

Equinor’s 750MW Firefly (Bandibuli) floating wind farm off Ulsan, South Korea, received a Renewable Energy Certificate (REC) award in 2024, securing government-backed financial support.

Equinor is in discussions with the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy, seeking an exemption due to changes in the business environment and technical and commercial factors. Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power and/or Korea Midland Power are considering stakes in the project.

The project has already selected multiple suppliers:

• Turbines: Doosan Enerbility/Siemens Gamesa 15MW

• Semi-submersible foundations: Samsung Heavy Industries

• Semi-sub technology: Ekwil

• Submarine Cables: LS Cable & System

• Cable Installation: LS Marine Solution
