General – Cable Installation
NKT has completed the installation of a 320 kV high-voltage direct current (HVDC) power cable system for the BorWin5 offshore grid connection in Germany.
The project, led by the Dutch-German transmission system operator TenneT, will connect 900 MW of offshore wind power to the German mainland.
The installation included 230 kilometers of HVDC power cables, executed by the cable-laying vessel NKT Victoria. The pull-in operation to the offshore converter platform, BorWin epsilon, was finalized in August.
The BorWin5 grid connection begins at the BorWin epsilon platform in the German North Sea, where alternating current generated by the He Dreiht offshore wind farm will be converted into direct current. The subsea cable stretches approximately 120 kilometers to the landfall at Hilgenriedersiel, followed by 110 kilometers of underground cabling to the Garrel/Ost converter station in Lower Saxony.
