Wind Energy – Nordlicht Project
Vattenfall has signed an agreement with EMS Maritime Offshore (EMO) to establish an operations site in Eemshaven, the Netherlands.
The site will serve as the operations and maintenance hub for the 1,600MW Nordlicht 1 and 2 offshore wind farms.
According to the company, Eemshaven offers excellent infrastructure for service operation vessels (SOVs) and crew transfer vessels (CTVs).
The Nordlicht project, set to become Germany’s largest offshore wind farm at 1.6GW, is scheduled to begin construction in 2026. The first turbines are expected to be commissioned in autumn 2027, with full operation planned for 2028.
Cyril Moss, Head of the Nordlicht Project at Vattenfall, said: “For a project of this scale, we need reliable and experienced partners for both the construction and operational phases. With EMS Maritime Offshore, Vattenfall is working with a company that has strong German roots and long-standing expertise in the offshore sector. The new operating base in Eemshaven is a key element in ensuring efficient and climate-friendly operations, thanks to reduced vessel transit times.”
Construction of the new EMO base will begin this year, with completion expected in October 2026. The facility will include storage areas, workshops, and office space, and will be built to meet sustainability standards, incorporating solar panels, heat pumps, and heat recovery ventilation.
In addition, EMO will provide port services for SOVs and CTVs under a separate service contract.
Vattenfall has already awarded contracts for the Nordlicht project to Vestas (turbine supply), DEME (transport and installation), and TKF (cables).
