One week ago, President Jennifer Geerlings-Simons welcomed the Staatsolie management team to her office for a comprehensive update on the company’s current state of affairs.
According to information from the President’s office, Staatsolie’s onshore and offshore drilling activities, progress in developing existing oil fields, and the company’s dividend policy were key points in the discussions. The status of the Savings and Stabilization Fund, which is designed to support Suriname’s economic stability, was also reviewed.
Almost 50% of Suriname’s offshore acreage is now under contract.
Sustainable energy initiatives were discussed, focusing particularly on an ongoing solar energy project. Patrick Brunings, the Minister of Oil, Gas & Environment, emphasized the need to plan for Suriname’s energy future beyond oil.
While the current solar project marks a step forward, Brunings noted that a comprehensive long-term vision for renewable energy is still needed. “When oil supplies run out, we will need to explore alternative energy sources together and assess the role Staatsolie can play in this transition,” he said.
President Geerlings-Simons emphasized the importance of ongoing dialogue and collaboration to align Staatsolie’s operations with the country’s financial objectives and broader energy transition plans. She expressed optimism about future discussions on these strategic topics.
