Both will be able to transmit 4 GW of power from wind farms in the North Sea to Germany’s mainland.

The approval relates to a roughly 34-km-long section in Lower Saxony’s coastal waters, Amprion said.

BalWin1 and BalWin2 will consist of 155 km and 165 km of subsea cables, respectively, starting from the North Sea wind farms. They will pass under the island of Norderney and reach the German coast near the Hilgenriedersiel area. On land, underground cables of about 205 km for BalWin1 and 215 km for BalWin2 will be laid.

Following the planning approvals, construction work on the island of Norderney can begin in July, Amprion said.

The installation of the energy cables is scheduled for 2028 and 2029, while the overall projects are set to be completed in 2030 and 2031. Once operational, the two connection systems will transport enough electricity to supply approximately 4 million people.
