Victoria’s offshore wind plans in chaos after Bowen’s rejection

Wednesday, March 5 2025

Wind Energy – Australia

The Victorian opposition says the state’s ambitious $100 billion offshore wind rollout is in disarray as the executive in charge of a project killed off by federal Energy Minister Chris Bowen slammed the decision as wasting one of the highest potential ocean sites.

Immensely disappointing news for the Seadragon offshore wind project with the Energy Minister making a preliminary decision to refuse the project a Feasibility Licence.

The Federal Court had ruled in November that Seadragon could be granted a licence for a smaller area than described in its original application, which overlapped with another application by less than two square kilometres.

But last month, Bowen passed retroactive legislation to remove his ability to grant a licence over a revised area, undermining the court’s decision and spoiling Flotation’s bid.
