Integration of motion-compensated gripper frame on Thialf

Friday, January 24 2025

General – Gripper

In close collaboration with Heerema, Ulstein Design & Solutions has provided engineering services for integrating the innovative motion-compensated gripper frame (MCGF) on Heerema Marine Contractors’ SSCV Thialf.

This technology is key to efficiently installing large monopiles for offshore wind farms, driving progress in the renewable energy sector. The semi-submersible crane vessel is essential in advancing offshore wind technology, aiding the construction of future wind farms essential for the global energy transition.

Heerema aimed to enhance the capabilities of the SSCV Thialf by equipping it with the MCGF for monopile installation. Positioned on the port side, the MCGF ensures the monopile remains upright and within required tolerances during installation from the moving vessel.

Following the successful upgrade of the Aegir, Heerema contracted Ulstein to assist with this conversion.
