First transition pieces for CVOW

Wind Energy – Coastal Virginia

DEME’s heavy lift vessel Orion has begun installing transition pieces for the Coastal Virginia Offshore Wind (CVOW) project in the United States.

Departing from the Port of Norfolk on New Year’s Eve, Orion sailed to the offshore wind farm to commence operations at the first turbine site.

A feedering strategy is being employed for the installation process. This approach involves Orion remaining stationed at the installation site, while tugs Ocean Wave and Alert along with barges Julie B and 455 transport transition pieces from the Port of Norfolk to the vessel.

Earlier in 2024, Orion successfully installed 78 monopiles for the CVOW project. Monopile installation is set to resume in May this year, as part of the wind farm’s ongoing development.
