Energy Transition – Hybrid Interconnector
UK regulator Ofgem has announced that it has approved the Initial Project Assessment for LionLink, the first hybrid interconnector in the North Sea connecting the UK and the Netherlands.
The initial project assessment is an important step on the UK side in the development of the interconnector.
LionLink is being developed by UK high-voltage grid operator National Grid and Dutch high-voltage grid operator TenneT.
It is a pilot project and thus the first interconnector to connect not only the high-voltage grids of two countries, but also an offshore wind farm in the Dutch part of the North Sea.
The project is internationally unique and involves a number of technical and regulatory challenges.
With a capacity of 2GW, the project will significantly increase interconnector capacity between the two countries.
Manon van Beek, CEO of TenneT: “LionLink is the first step towards future offshore hubs configured in an interconnected offshore DC grid. This hybrid interconnector supports decarbonisation, energy independence and strengthens UK, Dutch and European security of supply. We welcome this major next step in the development of the connection between the UK and the Netherlands. There are still challenges ahead, but we are confident that our joint teams, suppliers and governments will make this project a resounding success.”
