Submission Recommendation Report for Rampion Offshore Wind Extension

Friday, November 8 2024

Wind Energy – Rampion

The UK Planning Inspectorate submitted a report in relation to Rampion 2, that being a high capacity extension to the Rampion offshore wind farm in Sussex.

The UK Planning Inspectorate is a government agency that provides executive functions for the Ministry of Housing, local communities, the UK government, and local government alike.

The Inspectorate manages and deals with planning applications for national infrastructure, planning appeals and more.

Following a public consultation and a review of the application from RWE for a development consent order, the Inspectorate completed its examination period two months ago.

The Inspectorate’s Examining Authority or ExA has submitted its findings/conclusions and recommendation to the Energy Secretary who must make a decision on Rampion 2 before February 6th, 2025.

It is reported that Rampion 2 will consist of 90 wind turbines to be installed to the south and west of the current Rampion offshore wind farm.

If permission is granted, the installation of Rampion 2 could begin in late 2026 or early 2027.

In this scenario, the extended offshore wind farm would be fully operational by 2030.
