Wind Energy – Thor Denmark
All sails are set to start offshore construction on Thor, Denmark’s largest offshore wind project to date!
The Danish Energy Agency has granted RWE the construction permit, and according to CEO Sven Utermöhlen RWE now has everything in place to begin monopile installation in spring 2025.
Located about 22 kilometres off the west coast of Jutland, Thor will have a total installed capacity of 1.1 GW and comprise 72 wind turbines. Beyond that, it will pilot innovative technologies: half of the turbines will utilise CO2-reduced steel towers, and 40 turbines will feature recyclable rotor blades.
Preparations for the offshore construction start are in full swing. The first monopile foundations have recently arrived at the port of Eemshaven and will be transported to the site for installation early next year. Turbine installation is scheduled to commence from the port of Esbjerg starting in 2026, while the port of Thorsminde is being prepared to serve as the base for operations and maintenance, creating 50 to 60 local jobs.
By the end of 2027, Thor is expected to be fully operational.
