Fossil Energy – Permits
The permits of ONE-Dyas are (again) valid and therefore there is a green light from the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Climate Policy (EZK) in the Netherlands to resume the N05-A gas extraction project in the North Sea.
This recovery decision follows previous legal proceedings and marks an important step towards a more sustainable energy supply.
“In line with climate ambitions, the importance of natural gas will have to decline structurally and as quickly as possible, but even then there will continue to be a certain need for gas in the energy supply for some time to come. After all, the energy transition is not arranged overnight,” said State Secretary Hans Vijlbrief.
Chris de Rutyer van Steveninck, CEO of ONE-Dyas, emphasizes the joint responsibility with the Dutch government for its own gas production: “The transition to 100% renewable energy takes time. As long as there is a demand for natural gas, we will take care of our own production, which will reduce our dependence on countries outside the EU and reduce our ecological footprint.”
ONE-Dyas and all contracted companies are now going full steam ahead with the final work in the North Sea, to ensure that the first natural gas is available to households and businesses by the end of 2024.
The N05-A platform will be the first in the Netherlands to run on offshore wind energy via a connection to the Riffgat wind farm, making emissions virtually zero. In addition, the platform offers opportunities for future green hydrogen production and CCS.
The first gas production is expected in December 2024, with an estimated potential of 50 billion cubic meters of natural gas in the GEMS area. This project is crucial for the security of supply in the Netherlands and contributes to the economy, while production has the lowest emissions in the world.
