Equinor gets green light to build Empire Wind 1 off New York

Sunday, May 19 2024

Wind Energy – New York USA

Equinor has been given the final approval to begin construction of its 810MW Empire Wind 1 offshore wind farm off the coast of New York.

The approval from the New York State Public Service Commission was the final one needed for Equinor to start construction, ahead of delivering first power in 2026 and reaching full commercial operations in 2027.

Equinor has faced many struggles with Empire Wind, scrapping previous offtake agreements after inflation and supply chain constraints made the project economically unviable. It then secured a new power deal in New York’s fourth offshore wind tender earlier this year.

Empire Wind is due to consist of 54 Vestas V236-15.0MW turbines.
