Wind Energy – Converter Station

Weighing thousands of tonnes, the East Anglia THREE HVDC platform was hard to miss when it arrived at the Aker Stord yard in Norway this Saturday.

This offshore converter station travelled more than 3,800 nautical miles from a yard in Mangalia, Romania, during a ‘smooth sailing’ two-week journey.

An HVDC platform is a crucial part of many offshore wind farms, converting AC generated by the turbines into DC before sending the power to shore.

This particular platform is built for ScottishPower Renewables East Anglia THREE wind farm off the UK coast.

At the Stord yard, Aker Solutions will install the HVDC equipment and complete construction of the converter station.
