Southern Ocean region off Victoria, declared offshore wind area

Wednesday, March 6 2024

Wind Energy – Australia

The Minister for Climate Change and Energy in Australia declared an area in the Southern Ocean off Victoria, for offshore renewable energy, including offshore wind, on 6 March 2024.

The declared area in the Southern Ocean off Victoria covers 1,030km2 and is offshore from Warrnambool and Port Fairy, in western Victoria.

By declaring the area, the Minister is identifying where more environmental assessments and investigations are needed to inform future development options.

The Southern Ocean region is one of 6 priority areas identified for offshore wind development in Australian Commonwealth waters. Several factors are considered to identify regions that have potential to support an offshore wind industry.
