Belgium to feature Europe’s largest energy storage project

Saturday, January 13 2024

General – Energy Storage

GIGA Storage (via GIGA Storage Belgium) announced that it will develop an energy storage project with a total capacity of 2,400 MWh, called Green Turtle, in Dilsen-Stokkem, Belgium.

It is said to be the largest energy storage project in Europe.

This groundbreaking project, strategically placed next to a new 380kV high-voltage substation from Elia, will play a key role in the energy transition within Belgium and Europe.

This initiative will make a significant contribution to the energy grid by providing stored renewable energy during times of low solar and wind production, reducing dependence on coal and gas-fired power stations.

The new battery park will have a storage capacity of 2,400 MWh. This means that the average energy consumption of 330,000 families can be stored here each day and fed back into the electricity grid. In this way we contribute to the energy transition, the further development of a reliable energy network and affordable energy for everyone.

The chosen location is located on the high-voltage line from Van Eyck to Gramme and is connected to the Dutch grid.
