General – Cable Factory Taiwan
A joint venture set up by Taiwan-based wire and cable supplier Walsin Lihwa Corp. and Denmark’s NKT HV Cables broke ground last Thursday on a factory that will be the first in Taiwan to produce submarine cables.
The joint venture, called Walsin Energy Cable System Co., is investing NT$10 billion (US$311 million) in the underseas cable plant in Kaohsiung, with construction expected to be completed in 2025 and mass production expected to start in 2027, Walsin Lihwa said.
According to the Taiwanese company, the partnership with NKT, one of the three biggest cable makers in the world, will enable Walsin Lihwa to introduce sophisticated undersea cable manufacturing technologies in Taiwan and advanced operating models.
The plant will be able to produce high-voltage cables for offshore wind turbine power generation, the company said.
