Shell joins VindØ consortium to build Denmark’s first energy island

Wednesday, May 3 2023

General – Energy Island Denmark

Today, Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners announced that Shell is joining the VindØ consortium.

The consortium is aiming to take a leading role in developing and building Denmark’s first energy island.

“We and the other members of the VindØ consortium are excited to welcome Shell. Bringing decades of experience with large offshore infrastructure projects and strengths as a global energy company, the addition of Shell bolsters our consortium and our bid to construct Denmark’s first energy island. Together the consortium looks forward to the initiation of the tendering process for the energy island and the publishment of the tender material from the Danish Energy Agency”, says Thomas Dalsgaard, Partner in CIP.

The announcement follows the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) which Shell signed in June 2022 to join the VindØ consortium.

The consortium’s vision is an artificial ‘energy island’ in the Danish part of the North Sea – approximately 80-100 kilometers off the Danish west coast – where conditions for green energy production based on offshore wind are optimal.

The island will be able to connect 10 GW of offshore wind to Denmark and other neighboring countries, plus host an innovation zone with potential for large-scale Power-to-X production and energy storage. It would include accommodation and operation and maintenance services from onsite harbour facilities.

To develop the island, a partnership agreement has been signed with DEME, Boskalis, and MT Højgaard, internationally renowned companies within marine and offshore construction services.
